A Message from Your Counselor: Abuse Awareness

Dear Parents,

Christian Academy is committed to being a community that cares for and protects children. In today’s culture, we realize that keeping children safe from sexual abuse is vitally important. The statistics are staggering: One out of every three girls and one out of every seven boys are molested before the age of seventeen. Such abuse leaves lasting scars – mental, emotional, and spiritual. For these reasons, the Christian Academy Board of Directors has mandated that every child in grades K-12 receive age-appropriate training on how to protect against unsafe touch.

In the elementary grades, we are providing a Christian program that teaches children about God’s constant care, trains children to distinguish between good, hurtful and confusing touch/circumstances, teaches children about secrets, and provides children with tools to know who and how to tell if confronted with an inappropriate situation. This program was presented to and approved by the Board of Directors at their March 17, 2008, meeting.

All K-5 Christian Academy students will attend this training in January or February. This curriculum, which comprises of two thirty-minute sessions, will be presented to same-gender classroom groups.

We encourage you to use this time to continue or begin talking with your children about God’s design for sex. The CAL libraries have a DVD/booklet titled Simple Truths for ideas on starting these conversations with your children. This material is geared for parents of children preschool age and older. The younger you teach them God’s design, the more protected they’ll be.

Your questions or concerns are important to us. If you have questions concerning this training, please feel free to call Kristi Thompson, elementary guidance counselor, at (502) 244-3225 x. 1417 or email at kthompson@caschools.us.

Many blessings,
Kristi Thompson
